Nick Pisa, a seasoned journalist from the United Kingdom and senior reporter with the Daily Mail UK, recently visited Nigeria to investigate the road accident involving Nigerian-British heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.
During his trip along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, where the accident occurred, Pisa expressed surprise and admiration for the state of Nigerian highways.
He praised the country’s road infrastructure. According to him, Nigeria’s roads and highways are smooth, motorable and good enough to meet UK standards.
“I have got to say, Nigeria’s roads are looking top-notch,” Pisa commented. “They are smooth, motorable, and honestly, Highways England would be proud of them.”
For context, Highways England is the UK agency responsible for constructing and maintaining the country’s major road network.
“The speed limit is 100km/h, but drivers go far beyond that. Driving discipline here is terrible. Trucks are overloaded and people cross the road carelessly. Ironically, the road itself is good enough to meet UK standards,” the reporter added.
While Pisa’s observations have been widely praised, some critics have dismissed his remarks, owing to political bias or previous frustrations.
His comments, however, reveal that despite frequent criticism, parts of Nigeria’s road infrastructure are improving and deserve recognition.
