Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Bilyaminu Moriki, and 12 other lawmakers have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Moriki announced the defection during plenary in Gusau on Monday after presenting letters of resignation on behalf of the lawmakers.

The development follows the recent defection of Governor Dauda Lawal from the PDP to the APC.

The APC has scheduled Tuesday, March 24, to formally receive the governor and the defecting lawmakers into the party.

Among those who defected are the Deputy Speaker, Adamu Aliyu (Gummi II Constituency); Majority Leader, Bello Mazawaje (Tsafe East Constituency); and Chief Whip, Rilwanu Nagambo (Anka Constituency).

Moriki said the decision was taken to align with the governor and promote development in the state.

“Our decision is aimed at encouraging smooth collaboration between the state and the federal governments,” he said.

With the defection, the APC now has full control of the Zamfara State House of Assembly.
