Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president, has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the coalition-backed party with which he is expected to align ahead of the 2027 elections.

Atiku announced the news on Monday via his X account, uploading a photo of himself holding his ADC membership card with the simple statement, “It’s official.”

His action comes after he resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party, or PDP, in July, after a lengthy internal crisis.

The move has formalised his association with the coalition party, which he had previously endorsed in July as a platform for opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Babachir Lawal, to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Before now, Atiku and other opposition leaders had delayed their formal registration with the ADC.

The opposition unveiled ADC as a platform ahead of the 2027 general election with former Senate President David Mark as the National Chairman and ex-Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola as the party’s National Secretary as well as former Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi as the National Publicity Secretary.
