FIFA is preparing to pay out $1 billion in prize money in this year’s Club World Cup.
It will be the largest prize ever awarded in club football over a seven-match period.
The world football governing body has secured substantial sponsorship and television deals in the months leading up to the competition’s debut edition.
According to The Independent, $575 million will be allocated towards participation, while $465 million will be tied to sporting performance in the competition.
However, the participation fees will not be distributed equally among all clubs.
Rather, funds will be distributed via confederation, with the recognition that equal payments would have different competitive impacts across the globe.
