In a dramatic turn of events, Hon. Esosa Ogbeifun, a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area (LGA) of Edo State, has resigned from the party, just a few months away from the September 21, 2024 governorship election.
In a letter dated May 25, 2024, addressed to the Ward 5 PDP Chairman, Ikpoba-Okha LGA and made available to METROWATCH, Hon. Ogbeifun cited “open disdain and palpable segregation and discrimination” against ‘original’ PDP members in Edo by the Governor and his team as the reason for his resignation.
He also decried the “skewed political appointments and biased, unfair, stage-managed and undemocratic primary” conducted by the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) that led to the emergence of Dr. Asue Ighodalo as the Party’s gubernatorial candidate.
The PDP leader insisted that he can no longer tolerate the “suppression, oppression, intimidation, inanities, and absurdities” within the party.
On his next political move, Hon. Ogbeifun said he and his followers will explore other political parties and candidates’ manifestos and align with the one that suits their inclination and interest.
The unexpected resignation of Hon. Ogbeifun is seen as a significant blow to the Edo PDP, as he is a respected and influential figure within the party. His resignation may spark a wave of defections, potentially affecting the party’s chances in the upcoming elections, particularly in Ikpoba-Okha where the party’s Deputy Governorship candidate, Barr. Osarodion Ogie hails from.
