The leadership and members of various functional unions at Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma have commended the university’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Chief Dan Osi Orbih, and the entire council members for approving the payment of the 70,000 Naira minimum wage, long overdue according to the unions.
According to Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, Principal Assistant Registrar and Head of Information and Public Relations at AAU, in a press statement issued in Benin City, “union leaders unanimously expressed appreciation for the council’s approval. They noted that under the previous administration, their efforts to implement the minimum wage were unsuccessful, and union leaders faced victimization for advocating better worker welfare.
“Notably, the unions did not pressure the Governing Council before the approval, which highlights the council’s proactive approach to addressing staff concerns.
In a related development, Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma’s Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Chief Dan Osi Orbih, has assured staff and students of “well-thought-out policies” to reshape the institution’s fortune for the better.
Speaking with newsmen after the council’s 235th Regular Meeting on April 3-4, 2025, Chief Orbih said the council approved the 70,000 Naira new minimum wage, as recommended by the National Universities Commission, effective immediately.
The Pro-Chancellor urged staff to rededicate themselves to their duties, promising further benefits for dedicated employees. This move comes after staff members faced challenges under the previous administration, including non-implementation of the approved minimum wage and other welfare benefits.
