The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has freed former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal a day after he honoured a summons and was questioned at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.

Tambuwal, known to be a close political ally of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, appeared at the EFCC office at about 11:30 a.m. on Monday, where he was taken into custody.

Investigators reportedly interrogated him over alleged suspicious cash withdrawals totalling ₦189 billion.

EFCC insiders revealed that the probe focuses on potential violations of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, with the transactions in question said to have occurred during his governorship between 2015 and 2023.
