Former Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, is dead at the age of 72.

Uduaghan’s demise was confirmed to THEWILL by a family source, who revealed that the iconic politician passed away in Abuja on Monday, October 19, 2026, following a protracted ailment, bringing to a close the life and political career of a key figure in Delta State’s political history.

Born on October 22, 1954, Uduaghan served as Governor of Delta State for two terms between 2007 and 2015 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Uduaghan’s administration focused substantially on infrastructure development, healthcare, youth empowerment and economic diversification, with projects executed across the state’s three senatorial districts.

One of the major policy initiatives of his administration was the “Delta Beyond Oil” agenda, which sought to reduce the state’s dependence on crude oil revenues by developing alternative economic sectors and expanding opportunities beyond the oil industry.

His government also undertook several infrastructure projects, including developments around the Asaba Airport, improvements in healthcare facilities and the construction and rehabilitation of road networks across the state.

Uduaghan was widely known as the “Talk and Do Governor,” a sobriquet that reflected the perception among his supporters that he was committed to translating government policies and promises into tangible projects.

Before becoming governor, he had established himself as a medical practitioner and public servant.

He served as Delta State Commissioner for Health and later as Secretary to the State Government under the administration of former Governor James Ibori.

His experience in the health sector influenced the emphasis placed on healthcare development during his administration, while his years in government provided him with extensive experience in the political and administrative affairs of the state.

Uduaghan’s emergence as governor followed years of service within the Delta State political establishment. He succeeded Ibori in 2007 and secured a second term in office in 2011, leaving Government House, Asaba, in 2015.

Beyond his administration’s infrastructure and economic policies, Uduaghan was also regarded by many of his associates as a bridge-builder who sought to promote peace and unity among Delta State’s diverse ethnic and political groups.
