Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has expressed deep sadness over the tragic loss of a young child in Benin City, on Wednesday, following an unfortunate incident involving members of the Public Safety Response (PSR) Team.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Bugie Okhuemoi, Okpebholo described the event as “deeply painful and devastating.”
The Governor extended his “sincere and heartfelt condolences” to the grieving family, noting, “no parent should have to endure such an unimaginable loss”, while sharing in their sorrow “during this difficult time.”
Meanwhile, Governor Okpebholo has ordered an immediate and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the heartbreaking incident.
“The government will ensure that anyone found responsible is held fully accountable, as no life should ever be lost due to negligence or recklessness,” the governor vowed.
“The PSR Team was set up to help maintain public order, assist in protecting public infrastructure, and to help curb illegal activities like street trading and illegal parking in our communities; but we recognize the growing concerns raised by residents regarding some of its procedures.
“In response, the government will conduct a comprehensive review of the team’s structure and operations, particularly in the areas of personnel recruitment, the scope of its authority, and its engagement procedures with the public.
“This review is aimed at ensuring that all government-sanctioned activities reflect the highest standards of professionalism, fairness, and respect for human dignity.”
Governor Okpebholo said his administration will not tolerate any action by government agents that disrespects, dehumanizes, or endangers the lives of the people of Edo State.
“Governance must serve the people, not bring them harm, and the government is taking decisive steps to ensure that this kind of tragedy never happens again,” he said.
The Governor, however, appealed to all Edo residents to remain calm and assured that the government is working to address the issue with urgency and sincerity.
