The Labour Party, LP, has announced April 28, 2026, as the date for its presidential primary, while state congresses are slated for April 25, 2026.

According to the timetable released by the party, Local Government Area congresses will take place on April 24, 2026, with ward congresses being held earlier on April 23, 2026.

The schedule was announced in a letter addressed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), signed by the party’s Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, and made available to journalists on Friday in Abuja.

Usman explained that the correspondence serves as a formal notification to INEC of the approved timetable for the party’s 2026 elective ward, LGA, and state congresses, as well as its national convention.

She noted that the notification complies with Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, and Sections 223(1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

According to her, these provisions require political parties to officially inform the electoral body of their congresses, conventions, and meetings.

“The Commission will recall that the party, in an earlier letter which it acknowledged, informed it of the postponement of previously scheduled activities to allow for wider member participation,” she said.

She added that the delay was also intended to enable the completion of the party’s ongoing digital membership registration exercise.

Usman stated that the party has now approved a revised timetable for its elective congresses and national convention.

She confirmed that ward congresses will hold on April 23, followed by LGA congresses on April 24 and state congresses on April 25.

“The national convention is scheduled for April 28 at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, Abia State,” she added.

The interim chairman urged INEC to notify its state offices accordingly to ensure proper monitoring of the exercises in line with its constitutional and statutory responsibilities.
