Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has defended her decision to distribute cash to constituents during an empowerment programme, saying some beneficiaries preferred financial assistance to business equipment.
The lawmaker made the explanation following criticism of videos showing bundles of cash being distributed during an event marking her third anniversary in the 10th National Assembly.
According to her, previous empowerment exercises showed that some beneficiaries sold items given to them, including sewing machines, to meet other financial needs.
“I have given out sewing machines to many, and at the end of the day, I realised they sold them to either boost their businesses or pay rent,” she said.
She added that she decided to give cash to those who requested support to start businesses or increase their stock.
The senator also disclosed that some beneficiaries would receive up to N5 million through bank transfers.
The programme, held on November 2, 2026, covered small-scale entrepreneurs in Kogi Central, including farmers, tailors, content creators and manufacturers.
Beneficiaries reportedly received grants ranging from N100,000 to N5 million, depending on their business needs.
The cash distribution attracted mixed reactions on social media, with some questioning the timing and manner of the exercise, while others defended the senator’s decision to provide direct financial assistance.
