Oyo Rescue: We Thank God, but More People Are Still in Captivity, CAN to Tinubu Government

“Today is a day of deep gratitude for the children who have returned, the teachers reunited with their families, and the parents whose tears have transformed into joy. We attribute all glory to God for safeguarding their lives through an ordeal that no child or teacher should ever have to face,” stated Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of CAN.

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, expresses its heartfelt gratitude to God Almighty following the successful rescue of the pupils, teachers, and other individuals abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area after enduring 56 challenging days in captivity.

The leading Christian organization also commended President Bola Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, the Armed Forces, Intelligence Agencies, the Nigeria Police, the Department of State Services, Amotekun Corps, local hunters, vigilantes, and all those who contributed to the successful resolution of this distressing situation.

CAN noted that reports indicating the operation was conducted with patience, reliable intelligence, and a commitment to protecting innocent lives are encouraging and merit acknowledgment.

“Each successful rescue serves as a reminder that when our security institutions collaborate with determination and professionalism, hope can prevail over fear,” the statement further emphasized.

Additionally, CAN expressed its gratitude to the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, for his support of the affected families during this difficult time.

“We are heartened by his commitment that the Oyo State Government will assist in the rehabilitation of the rescued children and teachers as they begin to rebuild their lives. We celebrate alongside the government and people of Oyo State and pray that such sorrow will not visit our schools again,” it concluded.

“While this development is indeed uplifting, I find it challenging to celebrate without also considering the other Nigerian families whose circumstances remain unchanged.

“Today, parents in Oriire will once again embrace their children after weeks filled with anxious anticipation. We share in their joy. However, there are mothers and fathers in Borno, Niger, and other regions of our nation who will still retire for the night, praying that the next knock on their door will herald the return of their own children.

“Their suffering is no less significant simply because it garners less media attention. Their sorrow is no less profound because the cameras have shifted focus.

“As Christians, we hold the belief that every child is a divine blessing and that every human life possesses equal worth. This is why Scripture implores us to ‘Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed’ (Psalm 82:3). Our compassion must remain inclusive, and our concern must not be contingent upon geography, ethnicity, or religion.

“The rescue in Oyo should bolster our resolve to ensure the liberation of every Nigerian still held captive by terrorists, bandits, or other criminal entities. It should rekindle hope for families who have endured an agonizing wait and reassure them that they have not been overlooked.

“It should also serve as a reminder that bringing victims home is merely one aspect of the mission. Children who have experienced weeks of terror will require time, care, and understanding to heal. The same applies to their educators and families. Therefore, we encourage governments, faith communities, and humanitarian organizations to collaborate in providing the counseling, medical assistance, and emotional support necessary for them to rebuild their lives.

“Our educational institutions must once again transform into environments of learning, rather than places of fear. No parent should have to choose between providing their child with an education and ensuring their safety.

“In this moment of gratitude, I implore all Nigerians not to let this welcome achievement lessen our concern for those who remain in captivity. Let us persist in our prayers, support our security forces, and stand in solidarity with every family awaiting the safe return of a loved one.

CAN said it will to continue pray for the complete recovery of those rescued as it prays pray that God comforts families still living with uncertainty and grant success to every lawful effort to bring the remaining captives home.

“Our celebration will be complete not only when those in captivity are released but also when all Nigerians can move about freely without fear,” it said.
