The Ogun State Police Command has taken one person into custody over the death of well-known singer Adesina Afeez, popularly known as Destiny Boy.

Police authorities confirmed that the matter has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Homicide Section, for a comprehensive probe.

In a statement issued on Monday, the command disclosed that investigations had begun into the death of the 22-year-old artiste. According to the police, one suspect is currently being detained while detectives continue their inquiries.

Reports of Destiny Boy’s death surfaced on Sunday after disturbing clips showing his lifeless body being transported to a mortuary went viral on social media, triggering widespread mourning and speculation about what led to his demise.

One of the circulating videos showed the late singer laid in the back of a vehicle, with cotton wool placed in his ears and nostrils.

In an effort to address the growing rumours, an unidentified associate later released another video, claiming that the singer had been dealing with an undisclosed medical condition prior to his death.

He said, “I’m making this video so people won’t spread false stories about Destiny Boy’s death. Everyone comes into this world to fulfil their destiny. May God grant him eternal rest. Destiny had been battling a health problem. We did our best for him, but sadly, he didn’t survive.”

Destiny Boy, whose real name was Afeez Adeshina, started his journey in music at a young age and became popular for blending Fuji with contemporary sounds. He began his career at T2 Boys Studios in Agege, Lagos, where he worked as a backup dancer for renowned Fuji singer Pasuma.

He gained widespread recognition in 2019 after releasing a Fuji-style cover of Davido’s hit track If, which went viral online. He later did covers of songs by artistes such as Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice, and Small Doctor.

In his personal life, Destiny Boy welcomed his first child with his partner, Iremide, in November 2024.

The police assured the public that more details would be made available as investigations progress.
