The Police Command in Kaduna State has refuted claims by the former governor of the state, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, that his former commissioner was kidnapped by police gangs.

According to reports, in a statement on Thursday, El-Rufai alleged that his former commissioner, Jafaru Sani, was abducted by “Uba Sani’s kidnapping gang”, referring to operatives of the Nigeria Police.

El-Rufai further stated that the former commissioner was remanded in custody by a magistrate without any police First Information Report or charges filed by the State Ministry of Justice.

In response, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir, stated on Friday, declaring that “there is no kidnapping gang within the force”.

“To set the record straight, there is no kidnapping gang within the Nigeria Police Force.

“The Nigeria Police is an institution established by the 1999 Constitution and the Police Act. These two statutes mandate it to maintain law and order,” he stated.

According to him, in the discharge of this constitutional duty, the police have the legal, legitimate, and constitutional right to arrest and investigate anyone suspected of committing an offence.

“Individuals, corporate organisations, and governments have the constitutional right to lodge formal complaints with the police.

“The police also have the mandate to investigate such allegations, and where it is believed that an offence has been committed, such matters will be prosecuted or referred to court,” he said.

The command urged the general public, particularly individuals who have held positions of authority, to exercise caution and refrain from making frivolous or malicious allegations against any security agency.
