There was heavy tension in the Oja Odan area of Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, following the death of a young man identified simply as ‘Ofe.’

The incident, which occurred around 11:00 AM on Sunday, March 9, 2025, was reportedly as a result of the confrontation between men of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and a group of smugglers.

According to a customs’ officer privy to the development, who pleaded anonymity, trouble started after a group of hoodlums attempting to transport smuggled rice through unauthorized routes were intercepted by customs.

In an attempt to resist arrest, Ofe, said to be a factional leader of the smugglers, allegedly brandished two dane guns alongside dreaded members of his group, aiming to overpower the officers.

Their luck, however, ran out as the customs’ officers, already on high alert, responded swiftly, leading to Ofe being shot and killed by an unidentified officer.

“Word quickly spread that a man named Sunday had acted as an informant, tipping off customs about the smuggling operation,” the source told METROWATCH.

“This revelation fueled unrest in the area, with agitated residents threatening reprisals. But local elders have stepped in to mediate and restore calm in the community to prevent further escalation,” added the officer.

It was gathered that the lifeless body of Ofe was initially taken away and deposited at the morgue by the reinforced team of customs. The remains were, however, later released to his family for burial.
