President Bola Tinubu has fulfilled his $100,000 cash reward promise to Nigeria’s Super Falcons following their record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) announced on Monday that the players had begun receiving the naira equivalent of the presidential pledge.
Tinubu had announced the reward after the Super Falcons defeated hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final of the 2024 WAFCON in July 2025.
Nigeria staged a remarkable comeback after falling two goals behind in the first half, with Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi and Jennifer Echegini scoring to secure the continental title.
The victory extended Nigeria’s record as the most successful nation in the history of the women’s African football championship.
According to reports, each player is expected to receive approximately ₦140 million, representing the naira equivalent of the $100,000 promised by the President.
Super Falcons captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, expressed appreciation to Tinubu for fulfilling the commitment.
The payment comes after months of delay, with the NSC previously attributing the process to administrative procedures involving the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
Tinubu had also promised each member of the team’s technical crew $50,000, alongside national honours and three-bedroom apartments in Abuja.
The Super Falcons have since failed to defend their title at the 2026 WAFCON, where they were eliminated by Cameroon in the quarter-finals.
