23 Years after, Oborevwori Moves to Rescue Abandoned DELSU Senate Building

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has moved to end the 23-year abandonment of the Senate/Administrative Building of the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, with the state government formally inviting qualified contractors to bid for its completion.

The decisive move follows the Governor’s earlier revocation of the long-stalled contract to pave the way for its re-award to a competent contractor capable of delivering the landmark project.

Governor Oborevwori had, during the 17th Convocation Ceremony of DELSU, expressed concern over the prolonged abandonment of the project and declared that his administration would take concrete steps to ensure its swift completion.

Making good on that pledge, the Delta State Tenders Board has now listed the completion of the Senate/Administrative Building among major projects open for competitive bidding under the Ministry of Higher Education.

The development marks a significant breakthrough in efforts to complete the strategic university complex after more than two decades of delay and underscores the Oborevwori administration’s resolve to tackle abandoned projects across the state.

Also advertised for tender is the construction of a female hostel block at the Delta State Marine Polytechnic, Burutu.

Other major projects include the construction of Olori Road Extension in Ughelli; rehabilitation of Egbokodo-Itsekiri Road and asphalt overlay of Swiss Cottage Road in Warri; as well as the construction of a major discharge outfall drain from Frank Akpuri Street through the Petroleum Training Institute axis to the Ughelli-Port Harcourt Road, with an 850-metre access road in Okuokoko.

The state government also invited bids for the construction and rehabilitation of Ogbobagbene internal roads in Burutu; Akaba Utevie Road connecting Amai Community, Phase II; and Utagba-Uno/Ndemili Road, Phase II, in Ndokwa West Local Government Area.

According to the tender notice signed by the Secretary of the Delta State Tenders Board, D.B. Abolo, the deadline for submission of bids is 12 noon on Thursday, July 23, 2026, while tenders will be opened on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, in the presence of bidders or their representatives.

The move further reinforces Governor Oborevwori’s push to revive abandoned infrastructure, expand investment in tertiary education and accelerate strategic development projects across Delta State.
