Brentford recorded their best-ever start to a Premier League season after defeating Chelsea 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium on Friday.
Jaidon Anthony, Igor Thiago and Fabio Carvalho scored in the second half as Brentford extended their unbeaten run in the league.
Anthony opened the scoring in the 61st minute, heading home from close range after Jannik Schuster directed Mikkel Damsgaard’s corner back across the Chelsea goal.
Igor Thiago doubled Brentford’s lead in the 83rd minute after Emiliano Martinez had saved Kevin Schade’s effort, leaving the Brazilian to convert the rebound.
Fabio Carvalho completed the scoring in the fourth minute of stoppage time, turning in Schade’s cross to seal Brentford’s first home victory over Chelsea since 1938.
The victory moved Brentford to third place with nine points from five matches, while Chelsea remained seventh after suffering their third consecutive Premier League game without a win.
Chelsea also extended their run without a clean sheet to 21 league matches, having conceded in every league game this season.
The result marked Brentford’s first victory over Chelsea at home since 1938 and maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso admitted his team had struggled after the interval.
“Disappointed with the second half, disappointed with the result,” Alonso said. “This is not how to compete in the Premier League. We were punished.”
Brentford’s next league fixture is against Fulham, while Chelsea will look to respond in their next Premier League outing.
