The Lagos State Government has outlined seven economic priorities to guide its development plans and policy direction in 2027, with emphasis on job creation, infrastructure, fiscal management and improved living standards.

The priorities were announced by the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Ope George, at the fourth Lagos Economic Roundtable held at Protea Hotel, Ikeja.

In a statement shared on the state government’s X account on Friday, George said the economic agenda would focus on ensuring that growth translates into better living conditions for residents.

“Our focus goes beyond economic projections to shaping policies that will strengthen competitiveness, promote inclusive growth and secure a sustainable future for Lagos State,” he said.

The seven priority areas are fiscal sustainability and revenue mobilisation; infrastructure development and economic competitiveness; employment generation and human capital development; economic diversification and private-sector development; food security and resilient food systems; climate resilience and the green economy; and data-driven governance.

On fiscal management, George said the state would work to improve internally generated revenue, increase spending efficiency and ensure responsible use of public resources.

He also identified transportation, energy, water, housing, digital connectivity and logistics as key areas for infrastructure investment to boost productivity and competitiveness.

The commissioner said employment and human capital development would remain central to the state’s plans, particularly in creating opportunities for young people and women through skills development and improved employability.

He further highlighted the need to diversify the economy by supporting sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, technology, tourism, creative industries and trade, while improving access to finance for small businesses.

On food security, George called for stronger partnerships with producers and neighbouring states, improved storage and processing facilities, and more efficient supply chains to address food availability and affordability.

He said climate resilience would also feature in development planning, noting that Lagos’ coastal location and rapid urbanisation made the state vulnerable to flooding and other environmental risks.

The commissioner stressed the importance of renewable energy, recycling and waste recovery in building a more sustainable economy.

George also said data and evidence-based governance would be used to strengthen planning, monitor projects and improve public service delivery.

The roundtable brought together government officials, economic experts, private-sector representatives and development institutions to discuss economic trends and policy options for the state.

Participants also highlighted challenges facing businesses, including unreliable electricity, high borrowing costs, limited access to markets and skills gaps, calling for measures to support business growth and sustainable job creation.
