The Federal Government has urged media organisations to avoid giving prominent publicity to terrorists, bandits and other criminal groups, saying excessive coverage of their activities only amplifies fear and advances the objectives of the criminals.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made the call while speaking at a National Security Summit organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists in collaboration with the Department of State Services in Abuja.
According to the minister, while journalists have a duty to report events, they should exercise editorial judgment in the interest of national security and nation-building.
“Please take these terrorists and criminals off your front pages. This is what they crave for free of charge,” Idris said.
He added that media organisations should give greater attention to the sacrifices and successes of security agencies rather than amplifying the activities of criminal groups.
Idris also stressed that the Federal Government remains committed to press freedom but noted that responsible journalism is essential to safeguarding national security and promoting peace.
He said a secure and stable Nigeria is necessary for the media industry and the country to thrive.
