The Senate has ruled out any review of the Electoral Act 2026 before the 2027 general elections.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Yemi Adaramodu, said the National Assembly had completed the electoral reform process and would not amend the law while preparations for the 2027 elections were already underway.
Adaramodu said any review or amendment would only be considered after the 2027 elections if there were genuine calls for changes.
He explained that the Electoral Act had already been signed into law and was currently being used by political parties in preparing for the elections.
The senator’s position followed a recent Supreme Court judgment that restored key provisions of the Electoral Act dealing with political party membership registers and the nomination of candidates.
The apex court had overturned the Court of Appeal’s decision voiding Sections 77(5), 77(6), 77(7) and 84(2) of the Act.
The Senate maintained that changing the law at this stage would amount to altering the rules in the middle of the electoral process.
