The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has assured Nigerians that electricity supply in parts of the country will improve within the next 48 to 72 hours.

Tegbe gave the assurance in an update issued on Friday amid widespread power outages, particularly in Lagos State.

He attributed the disruption to inadequate gas supply to thermal power stations and planned maintenance at the Egbin Power Plant.

The minister said the Federal Government was working to restore affected generating units in phases and address the challenges affecting electricity generation.

“My team and I are working to return the affected generating units to service in phases, with the first units coming back online within the next 48 to 72 hours.

“We are also working with operators to improve gas supply and accelerate repairs to the damaged infrastructure,” he said.

The outages have triggered complaints from electricity consumers, with Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company blaming instability on the national grid for its inability to provide Band A customers with the minimum 20 hours of daily electricity supply.

However, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) disagreed with Ikeja Electric over the cause of the disruption.

TCN had argued that the reduced supply was largely linked to lower electricity generation caused by gas supply constraints, rather than a failure of its transmission network.

Tegbe’s assurance comes amid growing concerns over the impact of the outages on households and businesses.
